Are you a pharma professional wanting to better contribute to sustainability discussions and transformation?

At CPHI Milan, the Alliance to Zero and Informa are joining forces to deliver a workshop designed to empower pharma professionals with the knowledge and tools to actively contribute to the sustainable goals within their own organizations and the industry’s progress. This is the first action of the two organizations who have decided to partner closely to promote industry change to more sustainable practice.

The workshop “Speak the same language: Jumpstart your understanding of a sustainable supply chain” will take place on 8th October, and seeks to spark conversation and foster collaboration between experts and supply chain stakeholders. It is an exciting opportunity to bring together like-minded pharma professionals focused on sustainability.

In this interview, we talk to the Alliance to Zero’s Vice President, Marwin Krull, to understand:

  • What this workshop is about
  • What attendees can expect
  • What is motivating the Alliance to run such a workshop

Marwin Krull: The term “jumpstart course” reflects our goal to provide a comprehensive no-nonsense introduction to the principles and practices of sustainable transformation based on a Life Cycle Assessment (LCA). This course isn’t just a basic overview; we want to fast-track our attendees’ understanding in a structured manner, to quickly elevate their knowledge and capabilities. By structuring the workshop in this way, participants should leave feeling able to hit the ground running and implement tangible sustainability measures in their respective roles. It’s about giving them a head start on their journey towards net zero compliance, and recognizing how collaboration can help everyone accelerate their progress and ultimately achieve their goals.

Marwin Krull: The workshop is designed for professionals across the pharmaceutical industry who are interested in understanding the critical need to transition to a decarbonised supply chain. Complying with net zero standards requires collaboration, so our workshop targets professionals across the pharmaceutical and medical device industries, aiming to provide them with the knowledge and tools necessary to drive sustainability within their organizations. By bringing together experts and stakeholders, we aim to foster a collaborative environment where innovative solutions can be shared and developed.

Marwin Krull: Participants will walk away with a solid understanding of the challenges and opportunities in decarbonizing the supply chain, particularly in the context of injection devices to meet net zero standards. They will learn about best practices, and strategies for implementing sustainable solutions within their organizations. We will also walk them through how the Alliance to Zero, through its value chain collaboration, uses Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) to identify emission reduction opportunities. The workshop will use further specific elements of the Alliance’s own work as examples to discuss pathways to net zero compliance. So the workshop will be a mix of industry-wide insights and tailored content from our own experiences.

A large part of this workshop, however, is intended to be interactive; providing participants the chance to apply the principles of the LCA in a collaborative exercise. The aim is to provide attendees with a practical opportunity to draw upon the workshop’s learnings and use them straight away.

Marwin Krull: Our ultimate mission is the realization of net zero products. Achieving this requires a complete transformation of the supply chain. This challenge is an ecosystem problem that no single company can solve on their own, which is why collaboration is so crucial. Our strategy focuses on creating clear awareness and understanding of the problems, both at company level and a supply chain level – as well as developing practical, tangible solutions of mutual benefit. This workshop and other events like it are crucial, as they enable us to deliver on the educational aspects of our strategy and share our solutions with a broader audience and on a larger scale.

Marwin Krull: Sustainability isn’t just the job of specialists, and transformation towards sustainability doesn’t only require the work of experts in the field; it takes everyone in the industry to develop a good level of sustainability knowledge and integrate it into their daily job. Events like CPHI, with its reach of over 60,000 industry professionals, are a perfect platform to reach a wider audience with people in different functions and companies in different positions across the value chain.

On top of this, Informa, the organizer of CPHI, has a strong focus on sustainability in both event organization and education for sustainability change in the industry. And they have a great reach. We have specific content and need a platform to reach a wide audience. This makes us ideal partners and we jointly decided to collaborate for our common goals. So both, the CPHI as event and in general the partnership with Informa is exciting to us as Alliance to Zero and huge opportunity to deliver our mission.

Marwin Krull: Personally, I’m excited about the opportunity to engage with a diverse group of industry professionals and to see the exchange of ideas and solutions. It’s always inspiring to witness the collective energy and commitment of participants as they work towards a common goal of sustainability. I’m also looking forward to the potential collaborations and partnerships that may emerge from this event, driving further progress in our own journey towards our net zero goals.

Facilitating the pharma industry to transition to net zero supply chains is the Alliance to Zero’s central goal. Through this workshop, we are excited to share our expertise and engage with the industry’s key implementers, who are critical in the journey to zero.
